Jan is one of Australia’s most distinguished screenwriters. In 1997 he received an Academy ® Award Nomination for his screenplay for Shine, as well as a BAFTA nomination, a Writers’ Guild of America nomination and a Golden Globe nomination. The film won Best Screenplay at the Australian Film Institute Awards and the Australian Writers Guild Awards.

In 2003 he wrote and directed Love’s Brother, an Australian/UK co-production starring Giovanni Ribisi and Adam Garcia. It won the Best Film Award at the 2004 Houston International Film Festival as well as the Grand Prize for Best Film  at the Heartland Film Festival Indianapolis, 2004. It was nominated for six Australian Film Institute Awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay.

Jan also adapted The Notebook for New Line Cinema in the US. It stars Gena Rowlands, James Garner and Sam Shepard.

His most recent film Mao’s Last Dancer, directed by Bruce Beresford, was a runner-up for the highly coveted People’s Choice Award at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. It has become a smash hit at the Australian box office since it’s release in October. It stars Bruce Greenwood, Kyle Maclachlan, Joan Chen and Chi Cao.
